Graceful Gardens is a full service urban gardening company that provides design, installation, and maintenance services for gardens in downtown Philadelphia.
Utilizing organic gardening techniques and materials, we combine a love of nature, people, food, design and healthy urban habitat to serve the Philadelphia community.
Specialties include seasonal container plantings, perennial garden designs, edible landscapes, and transforming the urban hardscape into lush and artistic outdoor living space.
Our focus is always on service while we create garden spaces that reflect the aesthetic, lifestyle and personal preferences of each client. This means that every garden is unique and that service is provided with a very high level of detail, care, and consideration for the clients’ best interests.
Graceful Gardens is currently seeking an experienced foreperson with a love of gardening and an appreciation for the power of plants to transform space and improve the quality of urban life, excellent communication skills, and a passion for providing excellent customer service. This is a full-time position, starting February 28th, 2017.
The Foreperson will be a full-time employee and an integral part of the Graceful Gardens team. Under the general supervision of owner Grace Wicks and the Senior Foreperson, this person will be responsible for the care and maintenance of client's’ gardens, containers, and irrigation systems. While working collaboratively with a team of full-time staff as well as seasonal gardeners, the Foreperson’s responsibilities will include all aspects of installing, monitoring, caring for, and reporting on client’s gardens. The foreperson will also collaborate with the Senior Foreperson when it comes to maintaining and organizing the company’s base of operations and directing small crews through daily service.
-Arriving on time and prepared for work and client appointments.
-Staging equipment, supplies, and materials for daily service.
-Executing daily gardening tasks and project-based work including but not limited to: planting, transplanting, soil amendment, irrigation system installation and management, pest control, mulching, pruning, perennial garden maintenance, and monitoring equipment and crew needs.
-Communicating with Grace and other Forepeople in a timely manner if materials and tools need to be restocked, replaced, or repaired verbally and via the Shopping list
-Supervising staff and seasonal gardeners in gardening tasks on and off of the jobsite.
-Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment and communicate efficiently.
-Ability to perform heavy physical labor (able to lift and carry 50 pounds) on a daily basis.
-Exercising personal safety measures and reminding support gardeners to do the same.
-Treating client’s property with care. Respecting client’s privacy and safety.
-Operating company vehicles and using company tools and supplies with care and respect.
-Track the hours of each staff member on the jobsite as well as services rendered and materials used in a service sheet.As well as photographing properties at completion of service for each appointment and filing the images in the client photo album.
-Notifying Grace of any concerns
-Recording any incidents
-Weekly check in with Grace regarding service and staffing from the previous and upcoming week
-Stewarding the properties they are responsible for, communicating with Grace about the performance of those gardens and ideas for improvement and relevant client communications.
-Updating client profiles and making notes for future service appointments in google calendar.
-Interacting with clients and representing Graceful Gardens in a professional manner.
-Organizing crews to ensure that the inventory is well maintained and kept in peak condition. This includes but is not limited to watering, fertilizing, deadheading, and repotting inventory, as well as training seasonal gardeners to perform these tasks.
-Helping to organize and maintain the company’s base of operations. Tasks include but are not limited to cleaning, stocking, and ordering and/or picking up inventory.
-Executing tasks in accordance with the schedule and working alongside other full-time staff and seasonal gardeners.
The primary tasks of the Foreperson during the winter season include work on the special projects as well as preparation for the spring and summer season.
-Must have a valid driver’s license. The ability to drive stick is appreciated.
-Significant experience in gardening work including IPM, watering, fertilizing, pruning, grooming, and general maintenance, AND/OR completion of a horticulture-related program from an accredited college or other recognized institution.
-A love of gardening and an appreciation for the power of plants to transform space and improve the quality of urban life
-Excellent communication skills
-Passion for providing excellent customer service and a positive attitude
-Ability to lead a small crew as well as follow instructions and work as part of a team
-Able to work occasional weekends and overtime
-Ability to work in all weather conditions
-The following skills are not required but would be a plus:
Building and carpentry skills
Background in or knowledge of design software for landscape renderings.
The weekly schedule is Tuesday – Friday. During peak season, there will be some weekends or Mondays that you will need to work doing a variety of operations for the company. Workday hours are 8AM – 6:30PM with a 30 minute lunch break. There may be some variance in end time depending on the time of year, workload, and available light.
Applicants must be available Tuesday – Friday from February 28th – December 15.th
The hourly wage for this position begins at $20. A $125 every 6 months, after 6 month of employment, towards proactive health activities (gym membership, massage, yoga classes, etc.).
