Job Description
The Production manager is responsible for ensuring the growing process at Western Star runs reliably and efficiently while maintaining the quality standards of the company, and for the planning, purchasing and organizing involved with the production process.


  • Responsible for Production across our 2 locations and 100 acres of property.
  • Provide technical advice and work with Foreman to produce plant material that continues to uphold the standards set by Western Star
  • Oversee Yard Foreman with production issues.
  • Coordinating the ordering and delivery of liners, bare root etc. Reviewing lists from liner sources whether pre orders or regular availability and utilizing levels to determine need.
  • Set, review and update current levels.
  • Annual levels meeting with sales to discuss new varieties and varieties we are no longer going to grow.
  • Create and Coordinate weekly Shifting lists at both locations.
  • Oversee and distribute monthly Production Calendars.
  • Coordinating the ordering and delivery of all dry goods; Stakes, chemicals, soil mix, boxes, containers, etc.
  • Review weekly reports from Pedro/Galt and Eduardo/Sunol.
  • Shifting lists - update and review requests to shift and add to list and remove completed items. Review production usage.
  • Compile Bump up lists weekly and send out to sales.
  • Manage the use of growing space at both locations.
  • Creating and analyzing Monthly top 50 lists.

Pest Management

  • Working with Foreman, oversee pest identification and management and create spraying lists.
  • Monthly pesticide reporting for both locations.
  • Work with Local Ag Departments on required inspections and any issues


  • Have an active role in inventory cycling. Coordinate inventory cycling.
  • Entering and monitoring of inventory cycle data.
  • Add new items to inventory - Create Product codes with prices, work with management on pricing and adjustments.
  • Daily Inventory adjustments for deliveries. (S & G)s
  • Monthly inventory numbers to management.
  • Review and track Dump Lists at both locations

Other Responsibilities

  • Weekly yard tour at each location – monitoring of plant health, write up to do lists, spray requests, and shifting additions.
  • Daily review of all invoices and fixing of allocations.
  • Review and update monthly specials list.

Anything else that me be required to fulfill the positions role and responsibilities.

Job Requirements
Candidates should have practical or theoretical experience in Horticulture or related fields, and interest and passion for Horticulture. Good organizational skills are a must, as well as the ability to retain information through on the job training in preparation for the role.
