Position Description: Greenhouse Production Lead

Position Full-time, Part-time, Year-round

Reports to: Vegetable Department Manager


ABOUT CEDAR CIRCLE FARM AND EDUCATION CENTER

Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center is a certified organic vegetable and berry farm with a farmstand and education center. We have retail greenhouses, a farm kitchen, a coffee shop, and a unique CSA program.


Our organization has a deep commitment to developing regenerative agriculture practices for our annual vegetable and flower production farm and to educating consumers about the need to support farms who are committed to growing food in a manner that improves and nourishes the soil. We are looking for a detail oriented team member to support and improve our greenhouse growing systems and who is eager to be involved in a mission driven organization.


POSITION OVERVIEW


The Greenhouse Production Lead is responsible for supporting our vegetable production team by managing all vegetable production department indoor growing environments at Cedar Circle, including our propagation house, high tunnels, and movable greenhouses. Your primary responsibility will be seeding and watering, planting, pruning, harvesting, and caring for our high tunnel and greenhouse crops. This position is also responsible for planning and managing Cedar Circle Farm’s annual vegetable and herb plant starts and plays a role in maintaining all infrastructure related to protected culture growing. As a member of a diversified farm team, the greenhouse production lead will also work alongside our field team in harvest, planting, and weeding projects as needed.


RESPONSIBILITIES


Propagation House Management

  • In alignment with our greenhouse seeding schedule, seed and pot-up vegetable transplants throughout the season

  • Diligently water and care for starts growing in our propagation tunnel

  • Monitor high tunnel temperature and adjust heating, venting, and cover as needed

  • Facilitate successful crop planting through clear communication and timely hardening off of starts

  • Oversee and manage annual vegetable start retail sales spaces to ensure that only high quality plants are available and displayed appropriately

  • Perform maintenance and improvements to greenhouse infrastructure as needed in partnership with Facilities Manager



Greenhouse Crop Production

  • Prepare all indoor beds for planting using minimal tillage techniques

  • Manage crop fertility in alignment with our Nutrient Management Plan

  • Oversee all greenhouse crop production projects including seeding, watering, harvesting, trellising and weeding.

  • Monitor high tunnel temperature and adjust heating, venting, and cover as needed to facilitate healthy crop growth

  • Contribute to pest management through detailed scouting and implementation of organic pest and disease control methods

Harvest, Post-Harvest Handling, and processing

  • Assess crop ripeness and maintain efficient harvest schedule to encourage continuous yields of greenhouse products

  • Harvest of produce efficiently and consistently for a variety of market needs

  • Maintain a high standard for food safety at all steps of harvest and post-harvest handling

  • Work in the processing area as needed, including receiving and processing produce

Farm Planning and Management – in collaboration with the Farm Manager, Crew Lead, and PA Lead

  • Assist in establishment of weekly greenhouse production priorities and the development of weekly work schedules

  • Perform regular field walks staying in touch with needed projects, crop growth, and plant health

  • Assist in crop planning efforts and development of organization systems, production plans, and documents specific to greenhouse and starts production

General Farm Team Responsibilities

  • Proactively communicate work load and equipment needs with Vegetable Production Manager

  • Participate in crop plan development throughout the season

  • Support production systems in other areas as needed such as watering, harvesting, weeding and planting in the field and helping in the wash/pack area.

  • Work in compliance with FSMA food safety regulations

  • Maintain records for compliance with USDA organic certification requirements

  • Maintain a smooth, timely flow with team members while working through projects

  • Make sound judgment calls on project implementation and time management

  • Perform other tasks, as needed and assigned by Veg Production Manager

  • Participate in educational activities or events as required and pre-arranged by Education Program Manager

Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
At least two season previous vegetable farm experience
Experience working in propagation tunnels and with high tunnel crop production preferred
Experience producing plant starts for sale in an organic nursery setting
Excellent time management skills
Consistent attention to detail
Positive, energetic interpersonal skills
Clear, consistent communication skills
Ability to take direction, ask for help/clarity, and give/accept constructive feedback
Ability to work independently and within a team
Flexible, creative, and able to perform well in diverse conditions and under pressure
Ability to work for long durations in inclement weather – standing, sitting, bending over, or kneeling
Ability to work some weekends during retail season
