POSITION SUMMARY:

This associate will coordinate all the details with purchasing herbaceous plant material for the entire company.  This associate interacts with the design team, greenhouse staff, construction staff, and administrative support on a regular basis and other departments throughout the company.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Follow company policies, procedures, and work standards.
  • Purchase highest quality herbaceous plant material available, while negotiating the best price of plant material.
  • Follow the purchasing process (i.e. using agreements, dissemination of information to departments and production, etc.).
  • Order and receive all herbaceous plant material to meet the needs of the Construction and Maintenance Departments.
  • Record and promote inventory of available returned material.
  • Organize herbaceous plant material into job groups.
  • Oversee and participate in loading and unloading of herbaceous plant materials.
  • Work closely with the Grower on internal herbaceous plant material.
  • Work with Project Directors, Designers, and Client Representatives to review and discuss inventory report.
  • Informs Project Directors, Designers, and Client Representatives of relevant issues regarding securing specific plant material.
  • Participate in vendor trips to locate appropriate and needed herbaceous plant material.
  • Recommend and advise Materials Manager of herbaceous plant material inventory.
  • Identify new vendors for future purchases.
  • Communicate any status or internal issues and/or concerns to the Materials Manager in a timely manner.
  • Approve herbaceous plant material invoices in a timely manner.
  • Works independently and within a team on special and nonrecurring, as well as ongoing projects.
  • Consistently evaluates work and determine if further steps are needed to meet internal and external client expectations.
  • Participate in weekly departmental and training meetings.
  • Complete appropriate paperwork in a timely manner and ensure accuracy of all paperwork, including, time-off requests, and other necessary information.
  • Arrive for each work day on time and prepared.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in and contribute to Mariani initiatives.
  • Assist in the orientation/training of new Team Members.
  • Maintains effective documentation for all purchasing procedures.
  • Assist in diagnosing plant problems on site.
  • Assist other team members in the performance of their assignments.
  • Recommend process improvements and areas to improve our service offerings to clients.
  • Participate in other department and business functions as needed (i.e. the snow removal process in emergencies, holiday retail, administrative support, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •   Bachelor's Degree


Job Requirements
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, or other relevant field required.
At least 2 years professional experience required, preferably in an herbaceous plant buyer position.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of landscape terminology and plant materials.
Ability to work in a team environment, including taking direction and constructive feedback from team members, as well as providing feedback to other team members.
Minimize non-productive time and fill slow periods with activities that will enable you to prepare to meet the future needs of internal and external clients.
Demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with Mariani associates and vendors on a consistent basis.
Ability to deliver quality results under tight deadlines.
Demonstrate working knowledge of general computer functions and Microsoft Office programs.
Demonstrate accountability for plants being delivered on schedule.
Demonstrate flexibility to perform duties wherever volume deems it necessary.
Ability to navigate and use, with success and accuracy, the company production software (ASSET).
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work requires intermittent physical activity including standing, reaching, walking, and periods of sitting. Work requires travel both in and out of state to various nurseries, and driving a car to various vendor locations. Responsibilities may require evening and weekend work in response to client needs and deadlines.
