Job Description

Leading a team of two grounds care technicians and regular volunteer groups, the Horticulturist / Lead Gardener is responsible for implementing the aesthetic vision of the park. Responsibilities include year-round monitoring, maintenance and record keeping of all Natural and Ornamental landscape features.

This position reports to the Land Care Manager.

 

Primary Tasks

•      Develop and implement complete seasonal and weekly horticulture action plans with an emphasis on Meadow and Riparian Buffer management.

            Provide and implement solutions to underperforming landscape features.

•      Provide solutions to landscape health and fertility problems with an emphasis on organic solutions.

•      Perform daily and seasonal landscape work including planting pruning, pest and weed / invasive species management, spring and fall cleanup, snow / ice clearing.

•      Operate a commercial grade irrigation system including creating watering programs and performing basic repairs.

•      Lead crew members and regular volunteer groups in seasonal landscape maintenance tasks.

•      Act as an ambassador for Mill River Collaborative, answering questions for park visitors about horticulture, park history and design.

            Document, report and catalog plant-related information.

 

Job Requirements
Qualifications
• Three or more years horticultural experience with practical knowledge of plant culture, maintenance, and identification with an emphasis on natural areas management (Meadows, Riparian Buffers, young Woodlands)
• Degree or Certification in horticulture or related field preferred
• Ability to estimate project expenses
• Ability to lead others including volunteers in installation and maintenance of landscapes
• Ability to operate / maintain landscape hand tools and power equipment
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Knowledge of irrigation system functionality and repair
• Ability to lift 50-lbs
• Working knowledge of commonly used computer programs (MS Office)
• Energetic, Hardworking, self-motivated and detail oriented
• Valid driver’s license
• Pesticide Applicator or Arborist licenses a plus

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
• Full-time, 40 hour per week, non-exempt position.
• Work schedule varies to meet the needs of the park, may include some weekends, holidays and evenings
