Job Description
Moors End Farm is a family owned garden center/vegetable farm on Nantucket Island, 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  Nantucket is home to world famous beaches, a historic whaling town, renowned restaurants and a tight knit year round community.  It's an idyllic place to live and known largely as a summering locale for the very wealthy. It's also a great place to own a business.  Moors End was started in 1975 as a small roadside vegetable stand and, although we have grown considerably since then, we strive to keep that hometown family feel that attracts our customers year after year.  Currently we are looking for a grower/manager for our garden center/nursery.  We grow perennials, annuals, some shrubs, succulents, vegetable starts, cut flowers, and herbs.  Our customer base is about 50/50 wholesale landscapers and home gardeners.  In addition we have 20 acres of fields where we grow every vegetable imaginable for sale at our roadside stand.  This job would encompass all facets of growing.  It starts with planting plugs, seeds, and bare root starts in early spring and moves on to maintaining those in our 6 growing greenhouses.  A nursery manager would be responsible for monitoring plant material for disease or insect problems and setting up a spray schedule/ fertilizer program.   They will be supervising the irrigation and day to day maintenance of the greenhouses as well.  As the season progresses, we need someone to set up sales displays and represent Moors End Farm as a sales associate.  As such a candidate must have a working knowledge of annuals and perennials grown in the northeast.  As the season moves into summer, a nursery manager would be responsible for keeping the nursery looking clean and organized as the attention turns to vegetable production.  Tasks may include weeding, watering, repotting, transplanting, and ordering any sold out materials.  At the end of the season the nursery is put away for winter, Christmas tree sales are on for November/December, and after a break in January, we start again.
Additionally, the position comes with Free Housing included in the benefits package.  This includes utilities and all of the vegetables you can eat.  It is almost impossible to find affordable housing on Nantucket so we consider housing in a newly renovated duplex quite a perk to this job.  Paid time off in January and holidays is also included.
Job Requirements
An ideal candidate for this job would have a bachelor's degree in agriculture or horticulture. Additionally, 2+ years experience working in greenhouses would be beneficial. We hope to find someone certified in pesticide and herbicide applications. Also, this job requires lifting 50 pounds or more. This position involves working with the public so good customer service is a must. References required
