Longwood Gardens, a one of the world’s premier horticultural
display gardens located in Kennett Square, PA is seeking a full-time Senior
Horticulturist for the Hillside Garden. The Hillside Garden, part of the
Outdoor Landscape Division, offers a unique opportunity to work with an array
of hardy plants from around the world to create a seasonal, evolving, aesthetically
pleasing and inspiring garden for our guests. The Hillside Garden includes all
garden conditions from sun to shade and dry to wet. In this landscape, the
emphasis is on woodland to sun-loving biannual, perennial and woody plants as
well as geophytes.

The Senior Horticulturist will join a skilled horticultural
team that manages part of Longwood’s outdoor landscape, including the newly
revitalized Main Fountain Garden. We seek a person that can perform a full
range of horticultural tasks and duties with minimum guidance, including the
seasonal maintenance of perennial landscape. Responsibilities include making
informed decisions for the garden area, training and mentoring students,
volunteers and junior staff members on practices required to create and
maintain gardens to a high level of horticultural excellence. We are looking
for a candidate with knowledge of a wide range of garden-worthy plants and a good
eye for garden design, as well as the ability to prioritize, plan and lead
projects, and to work independently and with a wide range of people. The
successful candidate will have a passion for horticulture and a desire to pursue
professional growth by providing innovative input to the organization, keeping
up with latest horticultural developments, plant introductions and horticultural
practices through hands-on experience and educational opportunities.

Job Requirements
A Bachelor of Science Degree in horticulture with an emphasis in ornamental horticulture is preferred as is a minimum of five years of work experience within a public garden. Must have a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license, forklift operator’s training certificate, and aerial lift training. The position requires small equipment operator skills and the work schedule includes weekend, evening and holiday work. This position requires bending, stooping, the ability to lift at least 50 pounds, integrated pest management, and working from ladders and aerial lifts.
